U10 A Girls Hockey -PGS Tournament.
Result 7th
The girls were excited to play in a hockey tournament and were relieved that it was still going ahead despite the cold weather. When we got to PGS the sun was shining and it was actually warmer than at Amesbury.
The matches were 8 minutes one way and so the girls were aware of the need to be concentrating and to be ‘on it’ right from the start. First up were Sherborne House. This was a very close match with Amesbury having much of the possession. Unfortunately we didn’t take our chances and Sherborne did, leaving the final score at 1-0 to Sherrborne.
The next game was against a very strong Hoebridge side. They had a number of very skillful individuals who meant that our defenders had a lot of work to do. The Amesbury girls rose to the challenge and managed to keep out wave after wave of Hoebridge attack. Eventually Hoebridge scored. Amesbury showed great fight and had a few shots on goal but the final whistle went leaving the score 1-0 to Hoebridge.
Cranleigh B were up next and the girls were determined to win. This time it was Amesbury who had the majority of possession but we struggled to convert it into goals. It was clear to the girls that they were taking too long to get their shot off at goal and so in the latter part of the match they began to shoot quicker and as soon as they got into the ‘d’. This change of tactic resulted in an excellent goal which saw our first win of the afternoon.
This win buoyed the girls and they moved pitch to play a friendly against Highfield. This was an extremely even game with the score finishing 0-0.
After this Amesbury returned to pitch 1 for their 5th game in a row! Amesbury dominated right from the start and scored quickly after some excellent passing and finding space. The ball continued to be moved quickly and selflessly amongst the midfield and forwards, resulting in a another goal to Amesbury just before the full time whistle. Final score 2-0.
After a much deserved break the girls faced Twyford. This was another game where Amesbury showed great determination to keep the opposition from shooting at goal. Despite some close attempts at goal, Twyford could not break through our defence. In the last few minutes of the game Twyford put together a string of good passes and finished the routine off with a well taken goal. Unfortunately an injury to Amesbury stopped play immediately after the goal was scored and by the time it was sorted the hooter went meaning it stayed 1-0 in Twyford’s favour.
These results meant that we finished 4th in the group and played Churchers who came 4th in their group. This was when Amesbury started to play their best hockey, learning from their previous matches and working well as a team. Some confident play resulted in a goal to Amesbury who then defended brilliantly to keep Churchers out. Final score 1-0 Amesbury.
Overall the girls came 7th which was a great result. They had a lot of fun playing and as we only had 7 girls, all of them played every minute of each match! Well Done.
