The girls put in a strong performance today against Dunhurst. They dominated from the outset thanks to some lovely passing and fluid linking down the court. Iona and Elsie were shooting well and jumping with more energy for the rebounds, although they didn’t really need second shots.
By the end of the first quarter, the girls were leading 8-0. With some positional changes to limit the score, the girls carried on playing with lovely determination. Moving the girls out of position gave us the opportunity to develop the girls’ versatility on court. Milly played really well at WA and Centre, while Maia also scored 2 lovely goals when she tried out at GA. Well done girls on an impressive 16-1 win. Mrs Dover

Teamwork, communication and desire are the three words which I would use to describe this afternoons match against Dunhurst. The girls worked so well together and have really gelled brilliantly as a team. Lucy and Laura were on fire in the D, moving brilliantly between them and were both shooting with confidence. Jazzy and Lyla communicated well with each other and the shooters, signalling and calling for the ball in and around the attacking D. Charlotte and Raphy played with such focus and grit as WD. They intercepted well and followed up with accurate passing down the court. After every quarter the girls knew they had to focus on pulling the game wide to create the space to drive into. All the girls were really snatching the ball and pulling it in to make it their own. Sienna and Katie were strong in defence, jumping for the rebounds and intercepting with assurance. A super match played by all, well girls.

U11A Football v Edgeborough

Edgeborough kicked off what was to quickly develop into a high-energy game with both sides keeping their shape well and using the full width of the pitch. In the first half, Edgeborough were the slightly stronger, particularly in terms of holding the ball in the mid-field, but they were less effective in the final third and created few clear chances. After the break we held onto possession slightly better and were able to create more going forward, but it was in the final quarter, when Edgeborough were pushing up more, looking for a goal, that we hit them on the break. The ball fell to Archie in a good position just outside the edge of the area where he surged forward and coolly picked his spot, giving the keeper no chance. Edgeborough hit the bar twice in what was to be a rather nervy final five minutes, but we were able to hold on to finish our season with a good win. Well done!

1st Netball Team v Dunhurst

The last match before half term and it was a tough one! From the start it was played with pace and the ball travelling from end to end, Amesbury took the lead to begin the game 1-0. Dunhurst were quick to equalise and by the end of the 1st quarter the score was 3-2 to Dunhurst. Such an exciting 1st quarter, super movement in the D from Grace and Alice and great determination from the team. In the second quarter, Dunhurst stretched the lead to 9-2. There was some good marking from Immy and super interceptions from Emily and Lara. The 3rd quarter Dunhust passed with power and made the 1st team work really hard for the ball, especially in the attacking end. As the team went into the final quarter, the girls gave it everything. The centre court players worked up and down and varied their passing to get the ball passed the opposition. Good dodges and movement from Dora, Libby, Bo and Georgie. They drew the last quarter 4 – 4, but the lead was too big to catch up and Dunhurst won over all 18-7. The 1st Team all tried their best and showed real grit, well done. Mrs Page

It was an overcast day at Amesbury but that didn’t stop the U10B’s. The girls played extremely well, they took what they learnt in lessons and put it into their game. Although they struggled with their foot work, the girls still made some amazing passes and interceptions. They moved into spaces to receive the ball and stuck to their players like glue. The U10B’s really pushed themselves all the way to the final whistle and worked well as a team, supporting each other throughout the match. Well done girls!

Amesbury U10A VII Football v Edgeborough
Score: 1-1
A chilly and misty day was the backdrop for what turned out to be a very close and fiercely contested match.
Edgeborough looked like the bigger, more physical team however from the kick off, Amesbury were going hard into challenges and fighting for every possession opportunity. The score remained at 0-0 until late in the first half when a great shot from the Edgeborough striker found the back of the Amesbury net.
Amesbury went into the second half knowing they need to play to their strengths and beat Edgeborough down the wings. This they did on a number of occasion with some beautifully weighted passes being played through into the box. Only one of these could be converted to a score however and so the final score was 1-1. A super effort from all the boys.

Amesbury 3rd Football v Edgeborough
Score: 2-1
For the final football match of the season we played away at Edgeborough. The boys promised in the pre-match team talk to give 110% effort, enjoy themselves and to get stuck in.
Throughout the whole match I can hand on heart say that every boy that played in this match achieved these pre-match targets. A rotation of subs meant that players sometimes played out of position but this did not affect the way the game was played. Amesbury conceded first with an own goal which was deflected in when trying to stop a cross. Our heads did not drop and the evenly match game carried on at a ferocious pace. A tactical change at half time meant we had a little more pace up front which Edgeborough could not handle and a lucky goal for Amesbury pulled us back level. The winning goal was worthy on being on Match of the Day! Ollie turning and volleying home a cross which no goalkeeper would have saved.
A fantastic performance and the result took care of itself. Well done boys.

U10D Football vs Edgeborough
0-2
It was a murky afternoon as the team made their way out onto the pitch at Edgeborough to play their last football match of the season. As the match got underway there was a momentary lapse in concentration which the opposition capitalised on, scoring immediately. The rest of the first half was remarkably even with the team making some good excursions into opposition territory through some nice passing and good running. Sadly they were unable to find the back of the net in the first half with the score remaining 1-0. As the second half got underway there was again some good passing with the ball moving up and down the pitch with regularity both teams being fairly evenly matched. Unfortunately the opposition managed to sneak in another goal, which despite some good opportunities and shots at goal the team could not match. The match ending 2-0 to Edgeborough. Despite this the team played incredibly well and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

U11B’s Football v Edgeborough
Score: Amesbury School1-0 Edgeborough
For the final game of the season and for many their final game of football for Amesbury, it was destined to be an intensive, emotional affair. The boys went out there wanting to end on a high and enjoy the opportunity. The first half was a cagey performance with both sides panicking on the ball and although Amesbury had the better of the chances neither team could take a commanding position in the game. In the second half the team relaxed into the game and with a strong home crowd started to make progress. Everyone’s touch of the ball got softer and the quality of passing improved. A number of opportunities started to arise for the boys but it seemed nothing was going to go in. Until, a defender passed out wide, the midfielder took a couple of sweet touches out wide before firing in a great cross leaving the striker a one on one with the keeper. He curled the ball around the keeper into the corner. Amesbury took the lead! In fear we could lose the boys went into “beast mode” and defended as if their lives depended on it. Everyone got back to help out. Numerous attempts were fired in but the defensive wall held strong. At times it was tense and the ball seemed to rarely leave our box, but the boys held out. They did it. They finished on a high and what a game it was!

The 2nd netball team had a bit of a surprise today when they got to Bedales to find out they were going to be playing two matches; one against Dunhurst as planned and another against Prebendal. The girls did not mind at all though as it meant more netball for them! Both matches were split into 2 ten minute halves. At the end of the first half against Dunhurt the 2nd’s were down 2-4. The ball constantly travelled up and down to both ends with some great interceptions seen in the mid court. Super marking was seen in the defensive end and Olivia did a fantastic job at jumping for the rebounds and snatching the ball in. During the second half the shooters moved well through the D, allowing Emily to score a few terrific goals. Although the girls did not come out with the win it was great to see them all working more cohesively in the second half of the match.
After a short break the 2nd’s match against Prebendal began and the girls came out firing. It was great to see their passing stronger and more accurate than the previous match! The girls all worked hard, leading strongly for the ball and calling for it which allowed for great movement down the court. At half time Amesbury were up 4-2 and so going into the second half they knew they had to keep working hard to stay ahead. Well done to Maddie who displayed super determination chasing down the ball and following this up with smart passes to her teammates. A great day of netball and well done to all the girls!

1st XI Football v Edgeborough away

The 1st XI played well in the final match to win deservedly. Some positional shuffles worked successfully, so well done to the players for adapting swiftly to some new roles. Edgeborough took the lead rather against the run of play, a 3-touch goal when a huge clearance by their goalkeeper cleared the Amesbury back-four and their striker took a touch and fired home; thereafter he was pretty thoroughly policed and we resumed our territorial dominance, though required a slice of luck to equalise, when a powerful shot was deflected in. A second followed not long after and we led 2-1 at half-time. The second half was mainly Amesbury pressing with Edgeborough looking threatening on the break. Once we had scored a good third goal, the play began to stretch, as the hosts had to throw caution to the wind and inevitably left gaps for us on the counter-attack. One more good goal was scored and several more could have been. It was good to see that our work-rate was back to 100% and that we scrapped hard for possession, after two rather passive displays. Hopefully, the team has absorbed that such grit can swing matches even against teams slightly superior in skill; otherwise how does Crystal Palace beat Chelsea or Spurs draw with Real Madrid? Good teams have off-days and have to be made to earn the right to showcase their skill. This was a pleasing performance and I am just sorry that the very brief season is over!

U11C Football v Edgeborough

In their final match of the football season, the boys were looking to finish on a high. We started the brighter in the game, and dominated the possession, stringing together some good passing moves, but long range shots were easily saved by the opposing goalkeeper.
The talk at half time was to keep playing the passing game that they had developed, and try to get in to the box to test the keeper from closer. We continued to dominate possession and push for the lead, but unfortunately this meant that we committed too many players forward, and a long kick up field from the opposition left us exposed at the back and our goalkeeper no chance in a 1v1 situation.
Again we pressed and tried hard to get back in the game, testing the goalkeeper several times, but he was going to be hard to beat this afternoon. The second goal, that sealed the game, came from a similar situation with us pushing high up the pitch and getting caught on the break.
Lots of positives in the build-up play and passing game that the boys were playing. Lesson to be learnt is to maintain the defensive discipline whilst pushing for that goal. Mr Rouse

We had a triangular match versus Dunhurst with their only U11 playing both Amesbury B and C teams.
U11 C From the outset it was obvious that Amesbury were the stronger side with much better passing and awareness of getting into space. We fielded a team of 7, changing some positions at half time but it made little difference to the score as we led from the outset. The girls were able to use this as an opportunity to time their dodging, refine their positioning around the circle and try some longer passes into the shooting circle where our shooters were learning to position themselves near to the goal largely unmarked. Both shooters, Emily and Flora had a lot of chances at shooting and managed to convert a lot into goals. We were leading 8 – 0 at half time so then changed all the Amesbury team around so Milly and Alice had a chance to have a go at shooting where Milly scored 3 lovely goals so well done. Alice was buzzing around like a little bee, fighting for the ball at every available opportunity, taking time to look for free players and passing with accuracy. The game was very one sided but demonstrated the fact that their footwork on the whole is now sound, they have a better understanding of where to position themselves in certain scenarios and have improved on the time to dodge and when to stay still.
U11B The second match followed in much the same vein with Alice R coming on to play WA as we were missing Mia on the day. Amesbury completely outclassed Dunhurst so it was more of a training exercise, looking at common faults, passing the ball back in the shooting circle if you are not near enough to the post, positioning on court and generally being aware of play in all the court and not just in your immediate area. Special mention to Izzy who was shooting really well and scored lots of the goals. Great team work from all as it gave them the time and space to work the ball down the court and think about their positioning. Well played to all the girls today.

2nd XI (Football) vs Edgeborough

The 2nd XI went into this match full of confidence after last week’s superb performance. However, Edgeborough proved to be tough opposition. The match was evenly contested throughout, with both team’s creating good chances in front of goal. Max came closest when he hit a long range shot which struck the crossbar. Harry and Mark both tested the Edgeborough goalkeeper. At the other end of the pitch, Charlie, in goal, was inspired. He produce a number of excellent saves which denied Edgeborough the lead. Toby and Samuel in defence also had strong performances. The deadlock was finally broken when Amesbury failed to clear the ball and an Edgeborough forward scored from close range, giving Charlie no chance. The boys responded positively, applied pressure, but were unable to grab a late equaliser.
This was the 2nd XI’s first defeat. Well done to all the boys on a successful season. Mr Donaldson
Amesbury U10B and Football v Edgeborough
Score: 3 – 0 Win
Amesbury started the last game of the season very brightly and began with some very good attacking runs. Henry and Archie were excellent in midfield as they created a number of chances in an effort to open the scoring for the visitors. Cianan and Alex were superb in defence and prevented a number of good opportunities for the home side. Amesbury were the ones to open the deadlock with a well taken goal by Henry. This was soon followed by another by Archie and a third came soon after. Theo was excellent in goal and did well to keep a clean sheet. Congratulations to the team. 3-0 Win.
