U11B & C Rounders v St Ives: 3 May

Won:  12 ½ – 10 ½

Fielder:  Bibi

Batter:  Amy

Lady of the Match:  Orla

St Ives  A and B squad were a very even match for our U11B and C girls.   The weather was cold and cloudy but didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the girls who played with more vigour and determination.    I saw huge improvement in only their second game with better fielding and more awareness of the movement of other players and the ball.

We fielded first with Bibi bowling and Olivia at backstop.  Bibi gave way very few half rounders and the support around 2nd base from Sarah, Orla and Jenny was much tighter.    The boundaries at St Ives are created by either hedges, fences or a wall so the ball was stopped early making scoring full rounders quite a challenge.   It was good for our fielders as they could reach someone in the pitch with one throw.   St Ives had two girls who could hit the ball well which enabled them to score 2 full rounders and 7 half rounders.   We had a small team which meant that Olivia had to cover 4th base as well.  Considering our lack of players they did very well to contain the score to 5 ½ in the first innings.

Amesbury then came on to bat with rounders scored by Amy, Sarah and Jenny.  Erratic bowling and some fast running meant that we scored 6 ½ rounders.   There was much better fast decision making when it came to running to second base which was wonderful to see.

Lily then swapped with Bibi for the second innings, bowling first.    St Ives scored 5 rounders in this innings with Lily making two superb catches.    Orla at second base did  a sterling job of catching and stumping her post quickly preventing half rounder’s bring scored.

Our last innings started slowly with very few balls hit but mistakes by St Ives fielders and quick thinking by our girls meant that Jenny and Lily scored full rounders with lots of halves added by the others finishing up with a score of 6 ½ for the final innings.

Points to focus on for the next match would be not leaving your post until the ball has left the bowlers hand and looking ahead to prevent running out the person in front of you.

Well done to the girls for a very enjoyable and closely contested match.
