Stimulating a more inquisitive nature

Curriculum

Science at Amesbury is intended to provide the children with a base of scientific knowledge and stimulate in them a more inquisitive nature – to help the children open their eyes and really see and appreciate the wonders all around them.

There is no doubt that a good scientific education is vital if young people are to continue to follow, with interest, the important scientific debates of the age, and be able to contribute their opinions with confidence. What is more, it can greatly enhance one’s enjoyment of life!

We follow the curriculum through a stimulating and varied blend of teaching techniques and approaches using modern equipment in two well-resourced laboratories. There is lots of practical work in the curriculum to give the children plenty of opportunity to ‘do experiments’. Regular trips, events and science clubs are provided to stimulate interest and curiosity and inspire the scientists of tomorrow.

Pupils have up to 2 hours of science a week in Years 1-4, increasing to 3 hours in Year 5 and 4 hours in Year 6-8.

Head of department

Jonathan Lawrence was appointed head of department in January 2006. He has a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology from Southampton University, a P.G.C.E. from Bath Spa University, an M.Sc. from University College London and an MBA in Educational Leadership from Keele University. He started his teaching career at Northwood Preparatory School where he taught for five years before moving to Colet Court, (St Paul’s Preparatory School) where he taught for three years. He is a keen natural historian, sailor and game fisherman spending much of his leisure time either bobbing about off the South Coast or up to his waist in Welsh rivers!
